NOHO TAHI | Coexisting with Nature | Jesvin Sam Abraham & Ziyang Tang (Group 03)
Our design attempts to transform Mātai Moana into an Ecosanctuary and heritage reserve through phases and strategic interventions at large scale. These strategic interventions are aimed to be implemented periodically, carrying Mātai Moana reserve project to a 30 plus year term.
The design is approached through the lens of co-existence. By acknowledging the current issues of the site and the opportunities that arise, the design interventions aim to encourage the co-existence between social, cultural, and natural elements.
Our design seeks finding a balance between nature and humans. Co-existence for us is not about restoring and preserving the original ecologies of Mātai Moana and see how humans fit. It is about finding a balanced relation between humans and ecology within the complexity of the current social practices and needs.
The specific design interventions at a close scale are intended to be implemented at an attainable budget. The smaller interventions are based on community involvement and facilitate activities on significant areas of Mātai Moana, whilst producing opportunities for human co-existence with ecological and cultural elements that were previously neglected.
The designs aim to address the concerns and desires of the community members that we engaged with during the design process. Facilitating co-existence with respect to the natural ecologies of Mātai Moana.
